Central Plains Chapter Meeting:

"Emerging Threats: From Discovery to Prevention", Joe Stewart, GCIH

Joe is a Senior Security Researcher with LURHQ. In this role he researches unusual Internet activity to discover emerging threats, new attack techniques and the latest malicious code. Prior to this role, he was an Intrusion Analyst where he handled millions of security events for LURHQ clients while monitoring their corporate networks from the Secure Operations Center. He is a SANS Global Information Assurance Certified Incident Handler (GCIH), and has been in the information security field for five years. He is a frequent commentator on security issues for leading media organizations such as The New York Times, MSNBC, Washington Post, USA Today and others. Additionally, Joe has published numerous security research papers on Sobig, Migmaf, Sinit, Phatbot and other cyber-threats and attack techniques.

Joe will be presenting on Emerging Threats

The fact that corporate security teams now have less time to prevent emerging outbreaks has been well documented over the last year. Enterprises must take steps to stay ahead of the threat curve, in order to ensure they do not fall victim to tomorrow's rapidly spreading malware. This presentation will discuss the facets necessary to conduct threat research. It will highlight where organizations need to look for critical information, what to look for and how to assess the information discovered. The presentation will also address the actions security teams should perform to take action on this information, such as illustrating how to create Snort IDS signatures, to prevent the next outbreak from impacting their environment.

The topics of this event include:
    • A High level overview with Technical Content.
    • Information on performing Threat research.
    • Creation of Snort IDS signatures and more.
