"E-mail and Web Security", Andy Sciaroni

Andy Sciaroni is the Systems Engineer for IronPort covering KS, NE, IA and MO. For the last two years Andy has worked with IronPort to implement numerous deployments at Enterprises and Internet Service Providers. Andy has worked specifically in the email and email encryption field for over ten years. Andy spends his free time in St. Louis with his wife Theresa and three daughters.

Andy will be presenting on E-mail and Web Security

Application security solutions have lost their effectiveness, and when you consider the current state of the industry, it's not surprising.

  • Spam is back and tactics continue to evolve. The recent PDF Spam Outbreak is a perfect example - during this outbreak five billion messages were distributed within a 24 hour period, making it one of the 10 largest outbreaks of 2007. One month later we saw a similar attack using .exe files making up 17% of total spam volume.
  • Viruses are being made stronger than ever. In the last 3 months there have been more than 61 unique virus attacks. The number of URL-based viruses has increased dramatically, causing headaches for both email and Web traffic administrators.
  • Malware nightmares have only just begun. More than 50% of all desktop computers are infected with malware. Experts estimate that it is costing $150 per year per PC to clean infected machines.

Andy will be presenting on the challenges associated with preventing SPAM, viruses and network based malware from ever entering your organization. Through his discussion of the IronPort application security appliances, he will provide new insights into how the "Good Guys" are countering the expansive number of real threats. Andy will also be discussing and demonstrating how "Reputational Filtering" prevents malware from ever impacting end users. Finally, he will discuss how organizations can automatically encrypt sensitive emails destined for Internet recipients.

Please join us on Friday, December 7th at 1pm for the bi-monthly meeting for the Central Plains Chapter of the ISSA as we provide a concise overview of E-mail and Web Security.

The Information Systems Security Association (ISSA)® is a not-for-profit international organization of information security professionals and practitioners.  It provides education forums, publications and peer interaction opportunities that enhance the knowledge, skill and professional growth of its members. We hope the ISSA will provide a chance to interface with other IT professionals and further your awareness of security practices and technologies.
