A chip card is a standard-size plastic card that contains an embedded microchip as well as the traditional magnetic stripe. The chip encrypts information to increase data security when making transactions at a chip-enabled terminal. This presentation describes how the technology works and differs from standard credit card technology.

The topics of this presentation include:

  • Basic anatomy of the magnetic stripe card
  • Basic anatomy of a chip card
  • How transactions for both cards are authorized and processed
  • How the chip card works
  • Issues that the chip card fixes
  • Issues that the chip card does not fix
